Valsala has demonstrated regularity and a very high level of committment in activities at Al-Ameen school. She has excellent ideas and insights to share in meetings and has been instrumental in formulation of the 2010 SA content document and in the success of SA at Al-Ameen school.

Excerpts from Aashayein Foundation's Interview with Valsala.

AF:             How did you get into teaching at Al-Ameen school?

Valsala:      I had always wanted to teach. I got to know about Aashayein Foundation through one of Times's Teach India workshops and Shikshana Abhiyana fit my bill.

AF:             How was it getting started?

Valsala:      Chaotic (laughs)! It was really difficult to manage the class in the beginning. Dicipline was our biggest concern.

AF:            How did you handle students of varying levels of know-how?

Valsala:      Initially, the below average students were grouped and coached seperately in the same class. But they would get easily         distracted by the parallel class. So, we grouped above and below average students of 6th and 7th standard into two seperate groups - Red and Yellow. This way, the students never realised that they were divided based on their know-how.

AF:            Were you able to see considerable improvement in the class after this exercise?

Valsala:      It was certainly easy to manage the class. Improvement was seen in both classes in terms of language as well as behaviour. There was also a considerable improvement in the confidence level of the students, as the classes progressed.

AF:          What's new this year?

Valsala:    I have considered the suggestion provided by one of the guest teachers during the SA workshop and have divided the students into groups, each group consisting of students of varying levels of know-how. The intention is to encourage peer learning, which is said to be very effective.

AF:         Who is your role model?

Valsala:    Hmm! I am too old to have one! (laughs). As a kid, I admired Abrahim Lincoln. On a second thought, I actually admire anyone who has risen above difficult circumstances or hardship of any sort - financial, emotional, social, physical, familial.
