Help yourself reach Cantonment. The road in front of Cantonment Railway Station is Station road. Continue on this road (for a short distance) and then take the Queens road to the right. Continue on this road until you find Congress office on left and a bus stand on your right. After the bus stand, you will find J.J technologies to the left. Turn left after this, which leads to Venkatappa road. Just a little ahead on the left is Asha Deep.

People coming by bus can get down at Indian Express and reach Queens road. But for people coming in vehicles, this is one way. So have to go to Cantonment (Indian Express - Cunningham Road - Millers Road - Cantonment - Station Road) and follow the route as above

Inset: Pictures taken at Asha Niketan at Koramangala after SBS, on Sunday, 25th July 2010.

Volunteer Speak

Nisha Gautam is a Shikshana Abhiyana volunteer at Government school, Marathahalli. She is one of the most consistent volunteers at the school and is known for being well planned for her Saturday's class. Nisha has a Bsc and B Ed degrees and has interests in reading and drawing.

Excerpts of Aashayein Foundation's interview with Nisha Gautam.

AF:       How did you happen to join Aashayein Foundation and the Shikshana Abhiyana project?

Nisha:   Through Teach India Program in 2009.

AF:       Did you face any difficulties in your first few classes? If yes, how did you overcome them?

Nisha:   Not much! But it took about a month to get into the flow. For making the class really effective, I encourage the children by using various positive re-inforcements. Most importantly, I show them explicit affection, which they like a lot.  I try to keep a positive and cheerful ambience in the class.

AF:       How do you prepare for the Saturday's class?

Nisha:   I have a plan to which I teach. Before going to a class, I do some preparations of teaching  points and jot them down in my notes. I also use various study materials of my own children. I use lot of drawing to communicate concepts.

AF:        What do you think we can do more, to improve teaching in classes?

Nisha:   A few things could help:

            a) Increase frequency of classes: once a week gaps tend to be a bit long. Twice a week would be good, though I understand that it could be a problem for working volunteers

            b) Volunteers should have a little background in counseling over and above teaching. That helps in teaching effectiveness

AF:       What motivates you to go to school every Saturday?

Nisha:  The affection showered by the children. After every class, they surround me and try to stop me from leaving. The slow and steady improvement in the children is also encouraging.

AF:       Considering that we teach every Saturday for 1.5 hours, how long might one have to wait too see some improvement in the class?

Nisha:  One has to be patient, regular and consistent... then results show in few months.
