Volunteer Speak

Srivardhan, works for Motorola, India. He has been teaching the 2nd standard students at Sahakari Vidya Kendra school, Jayanagar. Mostly known as Sri, he, along with volunteers of 2nd standard have devised a unique theme based learning approach to help students learn. He is known to be responsible and committed towards his class.

Sri was selected as a winner of '2009 CEO Award' for Volunteerism as the 1st Year Volunteer recipient, at MOTOROLA. This award goes to a select number of Motorola employees celebrating their commitment to community and includes a $5,000 Motorola Foundation grant to AASHAYEIN FOUNDATION.

Excerpts of Aashayein Foundation's Interview with Sri.

AF:       How did you start teaching at Sahakari Vidya Kendra(SVK) School Jayanagar?
Sri:       I joined Aashayein through Teach India. I liked Aashayein Foundation's Shikshana Abhiyana program. As SVK was close to my house, I started teaching there from Aug 2009.

AF:       What has been your motivation to work for Shikshana Abhiyana?
Sri:       I always desired to become a teacher someday. That's my biggest motivation.

AF:       You have taught 2nd standard students. How difficult/easy was it to handle the class?
Sri:       It was a little difficult in the beginning to handle the kids. They didn't listen! It got better after I got acquainted with them. Now, almost after a year, I can say I can handle the class.

AF:       Any inputs for volunteers teaching lower classes?
Sri:       Of whatever I've observed, kids love activities. The best way to teach them is through activities. I referred NCERT text books. The books have mentioned different approaches for teaching kids, which came pretty handy.

AF:       Do you have a role model?
Sri:       Yes. It is Shivshankar, AF volunteer at SVK.
