Volunteer Speak

Himasri Pogola has been associated with Aashayein Foundation since August 2009. In a short span of a year, she has involved herself in Shikshana Abhiyana, BMKS and is currently heading Sunday Breakfast Serving project. She is an epitome of energy and enthusiasm, according to fellow volunteers. A 2005 graduate of Engineering, she works for Bally Technologies, Bangalore.

Excerpts from Aashayein Foundation's Interview with Himasri Pogola:

AF: How did you get started with Aasahyein Foundation?

Himasri: I was involved in Philanthropic activities from a very young age. After I got to Bangalore, I browsed for NGOs and zeroed in on Aashayein Foundation. I registered online and attended my first SBS activity at Marathahalli. I was awed by the way I was treated by the inmates of the orphanage and by the enthusiasm of the volunteers. After learning that a majority of volunteers were software engineers just like I was, inspired me further.

AF: In a short span of a year, you have worked across projects. How was your experience working for Shikshana Abhiyana and BMKS?

Himasri: Both these projects are my favourites because I got an opportunity to work with kids. I had thought teaching would be difficult, especially because I did not speak the local language. After my first few classes and correspondences with a few parents, in English, I realized that knowing Kannada was not entirely necessary and that communication knows no bounds. I feel at a loss of words to speak about the satisfaction I derived; one has to experience it.

AF: What sort of difficulties did you face in BMKS and how did you overcome them?

Himasri: I come from Tirupati. So initially finding places in Bangalore was the biggest issue. I remember my first BMKS survey in Shivajinagar. I hardly spoke, as I couldn't speak either Kannada or Hindi. I felt a little disappointed. But the next week, I left my inhibitions aside and started speaking in English. The parents responded. Now, I can speak a little bit of both languages (laughs).

AF: Any special moments you'd like to share with our readers?

Himasri: Every day is special at AF - my first days at BMKS survey, SBS, Summer camp, Holi celebrations at a school with 100 kids, visit to CRpatna school for Republic day celebrations and the list goes on.

AF: What sort of support did you receive from other volunteers/Aashayein Foundation?

Himasri: I got amazing support from every volunteer I interacted with. There are many who guided me in many ways. I haven't even met a few and have had only telephonic conversations with them. Also, I had a limited friends circle, but now, just like the opportunities AF presents, my friend's list has no bounds.
