Volunteer Speak

Kalyani Rajesh is a Shikshana Abhiyana volunteer at Diary Colony School. Known for being regular, well-planned and disciplined, she was the school leader of Diary Colony school in 2009 and has been instrumental in formulation of the 2010 SA content document. Kalyani has a post-graduate degree in S/W tech and systems management. She also has a Diploma in Graphic Design and has been working as a Graphic Designer for the last 10 years.

Excerpts of Aashayein Foundation's interview with Kalyani Rajesh.

AF: How did you start teaching at Diary Colony School?

Kalyani: Through the Teach India Campaign, I was introduced to Aashayein Foundation and got involved with Shikshana Abhiyana immediately and started teaching at Dairy Colony School.

AF: Do you think knowing the local language is necessary to take a satisfactory class?

Kalyani: Yes, it is necessary to know the local language to take a class.

AF: You were involved in conceiving the revised syllabus document. What has been the focus of the new document?

Kalyani: An attempt has been made to create a more step by step approach to teach English as a language of communication. Four aspects have been covered - Reading, writing, speaking and listening.

AF: How do you prepare for the Saturday's class?

Kalyani: I select a part of the syllabus to focus on, go through it, make notes as to what exactly I am going to teach them and also plan how much time to spend on each part of the lesson. I also prepare a small game to be played in the last 10 minutes of every class. It could be a word game or anything related to what we are teaching them.

AF: You have been a role model to many a volunteers at DCS; do you have one of your own?

Kalyani: I'm not sure about being a role model, but my role models would be my teachers from my school who were so good.
